The men locked Travis in a bedroom on the main floor. The first thing he did was check the window, but it had shutters on the outside. He slid the window up and tested them for strength. They might give if he were an angry, determined wyvern, but how long would it take to break through? The men could burst in at any moment.

Sitting on the bed in the glow of a bedside lamp, he thought long and hard about all the mistakes he’d made. Going after the hunters on his own, taking too long figuring out how to shift back and forth at will, entering the mansion to find the cage keys, coming after Mr. Braxton without a backup plan . . . If he was to be a hero like his dad, he needed to think first.

He smelled something weird brewing in the kitchen. He imagined the witch stirring a cauldron of bubbling, steaming potion and shook his head in disgust at the silly vision. She was old and grey-haired and wore a long robe, but she didn’t have a pointed hat and broomstick, nor did she have warts and cackle like a harpy. She wasn’t a picture-book witch with a green face and hooked nose, just a regular if eccentric woman who probably lived alone in the woods somewhere.

“Psst!”

He spun around. Seeing nothing, he narrowed his eyes and searched every nook and cranny—behind the bedside table, under the bed, inside the closet . . .

“Psst!”

“Nitwit?” he whispered, astonished. “Are you here?”

Sure enough, his impish friend emerged from a large trunk against the wall. He’d assumed it was full of clothes or bedding, but it was completely empty—except for Nitwit.

“What are you doing here?” he cried. “How—?”

She climbed out, shooting anxious glances toward the door. “Just checking on you.”

He tried to gather his thoughts. “Why are you here, in this room?”

“I had to hide somewhere. It was just coincidence that you ended up locked in here.”

“Rotten luck, you mean. We’re locked in together.”

She wrung her hands. “I wish I could help you. I just—” She sighed. “I’ll explain some day. But for now, you have to help yourself.”

Nitwit looked on the verge of tears. Travis sighed and put a hand on her tiny shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay. I don’t understand what’s going on with you, but you’re here, and that means a lot to me. I just hope you don’t get caught.”

Suddenly worried for his friend, he spun the imp around and pushed her back toward the trunk.

“Get inside,” he ordered. “Stay quiet, okay? There’s nothing you can do for me while we’re locked in the same room together, but once I leave here, then the door will be open. Just stay out of sight, all right? Escape when you can. Don’t take any risks for me. I can take care of myself—sort of.”

She climbed inside and huddled low as he stood over the trunk and held the lid open.

“Did you go home?” he asked her. “Did you
